So B. It is a heartful story about a young girl, Heidi, who lives with her mentally ill mother, So B. It, and her agoraphobic neighbor, Bernadette (Bernie). Heidi doesn't know much about herself, and her mother is not capable of telling her because her speech is limited to a small number of words. Heidi doesn't know who her father is, when she was born, if she has any other family, or anything about her mother's past. Bernie only knows their history after she met them, shortly after Heidi's birth. Heidi seems content with her life until she finds some old photographs from her mother's past which cause her mother to utter a new word "Soof" It is this word that pulls Heidi into finding out more about her past. Through her journey, Heidi finds out much about herself and her mother, but it all of this new knowledge comes at a terrible cost.
I really enjoyed reading this book. Although there were parts that were truly unbelievable, I think that the story as a whole is good. Many people live with disablilites, and I think this book does a great job of giving readers a glimpse of how challenging, yet rewarding that life can be. It was also interesting to read about mental illness from the perspective of a child.
