Rip It Up and Start Again

While RIU&SA is lots of fun, and sporadically informative, the author's definition of post-punk is often way off the mark. Devo, one of the so-called "Post-Punk" bands named in the book, formed in the very early 70's, and were considered, at the time, part of the Punk "movement". Wire and Pere Ubu, two other bands named here, formed in the mid-70's. Ubu, in particular, had recorded material out before The Sex Pistols had formed as a band, while Wire's Pink Flag was released in 1977 within months of Never Mind The Bollocks, Here's The Sex Pistols. So the author regularly confuses some of the "artier" Punk bands from the first wave of Punk, with Post-Punk bands like Joy Division. I suppose part of the problem is that the term "Punk", like "Rock And Roll" before it, has been redefined so many times at this point so as to be rendered meaningless, with genres as diverse as Hardcore and Grunge bearing the label. This book, though highly entertaining, is, to use a term coined by sci-fi/fantasy geeks, pure retcon.
