The Foreign Correspondent
by Alan Furst
by Alan Furst
Another Furst novel set during the build up to WWII. The protagonist Carlo Weisz is Italian, a journalist and an opponent of Mussolini. As Reuters foreign correspondent Weisz gets to travel widely. He observes the end stages of the Spanish Civil War where Italians fought on both sides. In Paris he becomes editor of the clandestine anti fascist newspaper Liberazione and subject to the attentions of the OVRA, Mussolini's fascist secret police.
Novels about Italy around the 1930/40s are uncommon, and this one was interesting for its insight into Italian politics of the period.
