Basically the usual good Michael Crighton stuff, interesting ramblings and speculations about science (in this case, the role of extinction in evolution). Certainly readable and enjoyable, but the plot line was not as solid as it could and should have been.

[Plot discussion follows]

1) Having the two kids come along was artificial and contrived, whereas in Jurassic Park it was natural. Did he include them here as a compulsory element in the case the book became a movie? (Note: having the kids along didn't help the movie either.)

But, once they were along, they did play a role in the development of the story, particularly in their computer expertise as opposed to that of the adults. The same factor was present in Jurassic Park.

2) Given the extreme danger and the many unknowns of the island, the people often acted in truly stupid ways. I found it hard to imagine that such stupidity could be real. The most prominent example is that of taking a living, wounded Tyrannousaurus baby from its nest back to the trailer to give it medical treatment. Predictably, the parents find the trailer and trash it.

In general, people seemed a little too competent and together considering their dire situation. Maybe I just don't give enough credit to people's ability to buck up in such situations.

3) Lastly, and this is not so major, the whole story takes place in about 48 hours. There is a lot going on in this time, many escapes and near deaths. It makes me wonder, but in times of extremity, I guess the pace can be relentless.

Still, you should read it, if you haven't.

Amy Dad, we need to read Jurassic Park together, and soon! It looks like such a good book...

Henrik Maybe, but I'm a little afraid of inappropriate stuff for you.

Amy It's too bad, because it's such a brilliant storyline.
