i always told myself that if i ever had to choose between a boy that made me feel exhilarated versus a boy that made me feel safe, i would choose the latter--the exact opposite choice of most girls in ya fiction. matched is yet another book that explores this decision, except with a slight spin: one choice is highly stacked up against the other, and going against what seems like common sense can be fatal.

i like the dystopian setting. high school already feels like living in a fishbowl. add government surveillance to that, and -- like cassia -- you begin to feel that your suspicion that you're being watched isn't just paranoia after all. the fact that everything, from the clothes they wear to the people they can fall in love with, is preordained was a really interesting (if not totally original) take on the typical high school love story between the boy-next-door and the poetic bad boy.

the only thing i would change is that there would be more action. i /guess/ that the red pill kind of explained why there might not be any action, but i was still kinda put out. you'd think more people would at least try to fight the system. i kind of felt like all the guards' threats were just empty promises. if condie is going to draw her inspiration from the greats like the giver and 1984, she should show the consequences that arise from being a rebel.

still; i was intrigued enough that i'd probably give book two a try. in the beginning i was like, uh oh, this book looks like it might get annoying. i fluctuated between suspecting predictability and waiting on tenterhooks to see if i was going to be right. it was about fifty-fifty. i kind of wonder how condie is going to build upon the relationships she has established in the first book. can cassia ever really look at xander the same way, knowing that he's not the selfless golden boy she thought he was? and what is going to happen between her and ky? /can/ anything happen? and what are the consequences of doing so? these are just a few of the questions i hope to see answered.
