Patterson's action-packed sci-fi adventure series has its flaws, to be sure. The members of the heroine's "flock" of avian-human hybrid kids (yup, you read that right) have pretty pigeonholed personalities--pardon the pun. Meet the tough but tender leader (Max); the cherubic younger girl (Angel); the chatterbox (Nudge); the rebel (Fang), the funny one (Iggy); the incorrigible prankster (Gazzy). Characters spout the kind of quippy one-liners movie trailers capture The Rock, Bruce Willis, or Arnold (in his hey-day) saying directly into the camera. The titles (School is Out--Forever) sound like lost Van Damme movies, and sadly, Maximum Ride is actually someone's name. That being said, even with being fully aware of the cliche police hovering, the books are unavoidably addictive with twists, fights to the death and a breakneck pace.
