The book I read is called Oedipus Rex by Sophocles. This book takes place in ancient Thebes. The main characters in this book are King Oedipus, Jocasta (Oedipus's wife) Creon (Jocasta's brother) and Tiresias (the blind seeker). When Oedipus was born he was gaven away. This couple picked him up off the street and kept him. One night Oedipus went to a gathering with his adopted mother and father. This young man was talking and told him that the people he was with weren't his real parents. When he asked them they told him yea. That night Tiresias told him he was going to kill his father and marry his mother. He was mad so he stormed off into the city and got into a fight with Laius/ his father. But he didnt know. Oedipus killed the man. Then another day they got a message saying their was a Queen that needed to be married because her husband was killed and it happend to be his mother. He goes off and marries that Queen later to find out that its his mother and the guy he killed that night was his father. The conflict in this book is that he marries his mother and kills his father without even knowing. He (Oedipus)later rips his eyes out of his head, and Jocasta hangs herself.
The theme of this book is fate because the blind seeker told him what he was going to do. Him storming off in the city determines the fate of him killing his father. Also when he says yes to marrying the widowed queen determind him marrying his mother.
This was an interesting and weird book to read. I would reccomend this book for people to read.
