Missing Mom is the story of Gwen told by her daughter Nikki after Gwen was murdered. Gwen was a kind-hearted woman who everyone loved and she was killed in her mid fifties by someone she was trying to help. Gwen's two daughter Nikki, the wild younger daughter, and Clare, the slightly older stable daughter, are left to sort through their mom's house before putting it up for sale.
Nikki at age 31 feels that she has disappointed everyone who ever cared about her. She is having a long term affair with a married man that the whole town knows about, she wears her hair in a punk style, and is considered pretty wild. Nikki and her sister Clare agree to sort through their parents house before placing it on the market. Nikki, who lives out of town, gradually moves in to the home to cut down on the commute. As she sorts through her moms possessions and meets with her mom's close friends are relatives Nikki discovers that she is not so different from her mom.
I really liked the way the story was told, It can be hard to imagine a parents life outside of your own, and painful to find out they weren't perfect or happy. Vague or cryptic comments that were made by a parent explained in full by a well meaning relative or friend of the deceased that make you view a parent differently. Missing mom addresses all of those.
