** spoiler alert ** I'd read this book before, but forgotten it was a story about babies and women's choices regarding them. From Molly O who waited years for a baby of her own (but adopted Caney in the meantime) to Vena who was blunt about the abortion she had as a teenager to Helen who lost her precious baby and then her mind, these are all women who make choices and the results are often heartbreaking no matter what they choose.

What I did remember was that this was a story about found family. Molly O, Caney, Vena, and Bui have nothing in common, but together they make the Honk a common home (along with Spot the three-legged dog and the gelding who is terrified of gunfire). The ending, when Caney returns to the Honk (after having left!) with Vena in tow and their child in his lap is heart-warming in a way that only Letts' stories can be.
