Grace came to the New York City from Trinidad at age 16 to live with her cousin. When her doesn't pick her up at the airport she finds her own way in the world. After a few years she finds a job "Minding Ben" the young son of a wealthy couple and this is where the book begins. The job entails muuch more than taking care of a young child as the mother insists that she also clean, do laundry and cook for them. All at a rock bottom salary.

I enjoyed the story for the most part, although I found the "island" patois hard to follow.
