I think my favorite thing about this book is where is stands in time against the first book. The first book dealt with how the world changed, this one is 5 years later. I like that we get to see what happened to that world and how people are surviving, and there is no question, people are still just trying to survive.

Rosa seems to be walking the line between surviving and living. She has built up a little community where people are still struggling to survive, but they have started to live too. The rules are rigid living in the Valle, but it beats the alternative. Things are going pretty good until Chris runs across the Valle and shakes things up. Chris questions how things are being run and makes Rosa question herself too.

Things come to a head pretty quickly and both Chris and Rosa make discoveries about themselves, what they believed, what they know, and how can they go forward with this new info.
