This was a good book, and if you like other Czech literature, you might like this. The protagonist's story is told in several non-chronological threads which can be hard to follow at times, but everything blends together well and wraps up in the end. An very basic reading knowledge (or ability to fake one) of several languages (Latin, German, French) is helpful, but not necessary. A decent knowledge of American literature is helpful as well, since the protagonist is an English professor, and class discussions of several books play a part in the narrative.
