Reading this reminded my of the reason Lahiri's short story collection "The Interpreter of Maladies" sits on my shelf. She is a great storyteller, yet I don't have the desire to reread her work because it is so sad--hopeless (William doesn't agree-- he sees hope at the end of the namesake).
"In so many ways, his family's life feels like a string of accidents, unforeseen, unintended, one incident begetting another." Is this true about life in general? I hope not.
I am looking forward to the book club. There are many directions we can go with the discussion.
