Honestly, I don't think this is one of Judy Blume's best books. It's good, it's interesting, and it definitely addresses issues that pre-teens and teens face. In this book, Blume deals with self-image problems and how judging people based off how they look is problematic. While a little cliche, it's still a good read and carries a worthwhile message. However, I found the mother and the aunt to be over-the-top characters that weren't very realistic. Actually, a lot of the characterizations (such as of Deenie's friends and classmates) were caricatured, I felt. That was the major problem for me.
