I'm a sucker for Southern sentimentality, even though I normally don't like sentimentality. And Supplee doesn't overdo it. I loved her Artichoke's Heart. She has a great way of making you feel a place, whether it's Starling, the small tennesseese town where Retta has grown up and just graduated from high school, or Nashville, where she goes hoping to make it big in the country music business.
Along a very bumpy road, she meets some good people who believe in her and give her boosts when she needs them. Also interesting are the short bios, born, job, big break, and life events about country music stars that preceed each chapter. Most like her came up the hard way.
