This was a historical romance that took place in New York and South Carolina. Retired Major Baron Cain has recently been notified that he’s the guardian of one Kit Weston. Kit is a tom-boy that has never really learned how to be a lady, due to her step-mother not being interested in her, and her father only being interested in his wife.

This book was a nice change of pace for me. I generally don’t read historical romances, but this one was nice. The story was interesting, with many facts about the south, the Civil War, racism, cotton, and how to be a “lady.” The story ends well, although in true Phillips’ style there are some major hills and valleys before it evens out. The characters were interesting, the side plots were good. Overall, this was a solid read. Not my favorite Phillips novel, but definitely high on the list.
