Read this a few years ago after having wanted to read it for much longer. Can't stand the way Niven creates a unique and highly compelling universe, as well as engaging plot, only to ruin it with his obnoxious sarcasm at every turn! I am not opposed to sarcasm, nor sarcasm directed at the very text producing it; Jack Vance does this to great effect and I love his writing. With Niven, however, I continually feel like I am reading the wild imaginings of an embittered old man rather than a wry wit. I don't care if Ringworld is a classic, compelling satire simply isn't Niven's forte. This book left me asking the question, so what's the point of all this?
