This is Bryan Gruley's first book and the publisher thought so much of it that instead of releasing it in hardcover, they released it in softcover in the hopes that it would encourage readers to take a chance on this new writer.

In hockey when a goal is scored the announcer usually yells, "He Shoots - He Scores". Well I believe that yell could very well sum up Bryan Gruley and "Starvation Lake".

There is a lot of hockey in this book and will defintely appeal to hockey fans, but it will also appeal to anyone who loves a good mystery.

Gus Carpenter grew up in Starvation Lake and was the goal tender for a youth hockey team that was playing for the State Championship. The town will never let him forget that he let the winning goal get by him and the team losing their only chance to win the championship.

After college, his dream of escaping Starvaton Lake comes true when he is offered a job on the Detroit Times. Gus gets involved in a major law suit that has him involving car maker liability for trucks that have faulty gas tanks (sound familiar). He is released from the paper when he refuses to name his inside contact in the truck company, which leads to his not being able to substantiate his claims.

He returns to Starvation Lake to work on the local newspaper.

Gus's hockey coach of 15 years ago, disappeared years ago in what was considered a snowmobile accident on Walleye Lake. Today, his snowmoblile surfaces on Starvation Lake which is five miles from Walleye Lake. Gus starts to investigate and finds that the towns past may conceal some dark and disturbing secrets, secrets that some of the people closest to him may have killed to keep those secrets secret.

There is some sexual content and strong language in the book.

Although most readers will see what's coming, most will find out who was involved or their degree of involvement.

The publisher is high on this book, so much so that they have already signed the author to a three book deal.
