After The Giver, this was a welcome evolution. Much the same kind of story, Gathering Blue takes a little different vantage point in the world she created for Sameness, and showed the other side of the post-apocolypse where things aren't quite as tidy. We see the human need for order and structure, though with limited resources and a lack of technology, order resorts to far less humane ways of dealing with the population under its control.
If I taught the Giver, I would immediately follow it with this book.
