I was disappointed in this Grisham novel. I have enjoyed the others I've read but this was dull. Sam Cayhall is a racist murder awaiting execution by the state of Mississippi. His grandson Adam, new to a prestigious Chicago law firm, together with the pro bono partner, try to stay the execution. Sam is not anyone we can sympathize with. The author tries to relate the case to the family history and mental state but that doesn't elicit any interest either. There is an unnamed, and menacing conspirator in the bombing Sam is convicted of, but he never emerges as a threat. All we get is a looooong narration of pointless legal appeals, with no sense of suspense, danger, or even movement. I guess it is a polemic against the death penalty, but no a very engaging one. I hope the next Grisham I open is better; I now need to start reading review I guess.
