There may be some spoiler stuff in here...

Well, it was the same Vonnegut with his amazing descriptions (that sometimes make me laugh).

"My soul seemed as foul as smoke from burning cat fur."

"It was with deep, idiotic relief that I leaned on that fleshy, humid, barn-yard fool."

"My hair stood on end, as though Angela were rolling on the floor, foaming at the mouth, and babbling fluent Babylonian." (Incidentally I met a guy in eharmony who thought he could do that...interesting conversation!)

The end was a little anti-climactic for me, and did not quite live up to Slaughterhouse-Five. Of course, reading it on SH5's heels by hours may have not been fair to Cat's Cradle! Vonnegut has definitely moved into my "favorite author" group without question.

I have decided that after the line, "She was a fool, and so am I, and so is anyone who thinks he sees what God is Doing, [writes Bokonon]" that I must be a Bokononist. It...more

610692 Ah...the first Vonnegut book I ever read. Fell in love with his writing immediately and have been fan ever since.

629685 You know, I read Slaughterhouse-Five in two days and started Cat's Cradle the same day. I would say that I was instantly a fan. I am completely enamored of his descriptions! And, I am pretty sure that I am a Bokononist as well...

What a fantastic feeling it is when you discover a new author (even if everyone else already knew that he was great) to love!

Do you have a favorite Vonnegut book

610692 My favorite Vonnegut is "God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater". Here's the Goodreads encapsulated review (which doesn't really do it justice):

A rich man attempts a noble experiment with human nature. The result is an etched-in-acid portrayal of universal greed, hypocrisy, and follies of the flesh.

"Slaughterhouse" and "Cat's Cradle" are also favorites. And "Mother Night". And "The Sirens of Titan". And...and...and...

Heh.

629685 No, that's great, I'm going to B&N tomorrow to kill some time before going out and I was going to pick up a couple more... there are a lot to choose from. It gives me an idea of where to go next as I really am enjoying his work, and am in the mood for more. Thanks!

629685 I was at B&N last night and got Breakfast of Champions and Welcome to the Monkey House, but they didn't have any copies of God Bless You Mr. Rosewater! Weird, they had nearly every other book by Vonnegut. Guess I'll have to make another trip to Powell's soon...Damn!

570489 Imagine taking every whim or opportunity and just going with it, seeing where it took you?

I used to live my life precisely this way (before I was married and then had a kid)... and dude, seriously wound up in some surreal situations. Most surreal of all being my marriage. It was odd years later to meet people I grew up with who were all disillusioned about life because all their plans had failed. I was like, "Plans? Huh. Wow... you made plans?" Of course... eventually life more or less demands that you stop floating like a leaf on the wind. Nothing annoys people more than behaving in an entirely random fashion... and children become feral little beasts without rhythm and structure... so... I have had to tame the wild whatever. I kinda miss tramping around... but I gotta admit, my bed is way more comfortable than a pile of rocks.
