Dreamland - Sarah Dessen.
This book's genre is Romance and abuse. I think this book was very confusing! I don't really know what the point of this book is .. is it standing up for yourself? Because she didn't really stand up to Rogerson until the end of the book. She didn't nessessarily stand up for herself either, because she was just in the ground. And her mother came outside and saw her with the bruises, and Rogerson ran away. I don't really get what the point of the book was? She meets this guy and they connect or something like that? They start seeing each other, and when she talks to another guy for a minute, he hits her because he thinks she is cheating on her? She should have left him when he first hit her, because obviously she doesn't know him. She met him a few weeks ago, and they didn't start at the friendship stage. They just went straight to dating. Rogerson has problems with his family, there was a part in the book where his dad hit him in ths face. I think that is why Caitlin forgives him even though he hits her. She realizes he has problems.
I don't like how the author didn't explain about Rogerson's feelings. It was told in first person by Caitlin, but the author should have included a section where Rogerson explains why he's doing all this to her. I think the author is trying to make Rogerson the bad person so the author doesn't have any parts between Rogerson and Caitlin where they both connect with each other and have explainations. And I don't like how the author didn't talk about why Caitlin wasn't doing anything about it. She didn't really talk about why she didn't do anything when he hit her, she just said he did it and she didn't do anything back. Whenever he hit her, afterwards he would baby her to let her know he 'loves' her so she would forgive him. So I'm assuming she just accepts that he loves her and just lets him hit her? There is no backup explaination about why Caitlin isn't doing anything about it. I like Caitlin's character even though I think she's stupid for not standing up for herself, but I think she might be half and half between round and flat character.
I think it's half and half because you don't really know what Caitlin's feelings. Like you know what is going on, but she doesn't talk about her feelings. It's hard to show how character's are feeling when it's told in first person because the character can't talk to the reader about her feelings. But usually in books there are parts where the feelings get shown, even if they're not said. I think she could be round because you know what's going on with her, but she could also be flat because you don't know what's going on in her head. I was scared for Caitlin because it seemed like she was never going to do anything about it if her mom didn't find out. I don't think this book is good, the author Sarah Dessen is a great author, but this book wasn't very good to me. I would not recommend it to other people.

Cassandra wrote: "This was a book to show how abusive relationships work. Its not hard to think this stuff is just some creative mind writing up a story, or un-realistic. The sad thing is, this stuff happens EVERYDA..."I couldn't stand this book. It's the one book in my life that I've read where the protagonist made me angrier than the antagonist. I would have been happy with the book if she stood up for herself AT LEAST once. But she NEVER did. And that's what fustrates me. Where is the character arc? The girl doesn't change throughout the whole entire story. I can't take her seriously as a heroine. I walked away from this book and all I remembered was this: She was abused. And she did nothing about it.
In the end I learned nothing. I felt like I wasted my time waiting for something to happen. Funny because I'm a serious fan of Sarah Dessen and yet she wrote my least favorite book.
In terms of real life--yes,I could see this happening. But in a work of fiction I expect the characters to change along their journey. Caitlyn never changes. And that's what dissapoint me.

I loved this book and hated it all in the same. I would have fought back, and defended myself. No way was I going to let some guy come at me, but then again it was no wonder she rebeled so hard with all that crappy tension, and pressure that was put over her. Of course she is going to rebel with the bad boy. Now, granted the bad boys aren't always so lovey-dovey, or so mysterious like un-realistic in our fantasy/paranormal books.
