I am actually actively annoyed by most novels that try to be socially critical, because so often they do it at the expense of telling a good story about interesting people. This book is a wonderful exception. It is first and foremost a story about a particular woman and a particular man, and only secondarily about the role of religion in the suburban U.S., but it is entirely fascinating on both levels.
