I have to admit that I would not have read this if not for my Kindle. I went searching on Amazon for free books, and this was one of the modern novels available (there aren't many!). The description caught my eye because it mentioned the Amish culture, and I was expecting perhaps a bit more of that in the story. Instead our heroine's family has lived on the border of Amish culture for generations, so that she and her family are familiar with some of the Amish quirks and have a couple of friends that are Amish, but do not live like the Amish and in fact have some clashes with them over time.
The story itself is a very straightforward romance novel, with a side helping of a suspenseful mystery. While these characters are also struggling to overcome the obstacles to their love, they are also trying to figure out who's causing the dangerous accidents as well as each working on their spiritual lives. Indeed, while the religious angle is less prominent than it might have been, it is definitely there and possibly the reason this was a free read.
However, if you like that sort of thing, this isn't a bad book, and is in fact the start of a series of stories centering around this house and community. I've already guessed who the romantic leads of the next book might be, and while I am curious to see if I'm right, I won't be picking up any more of these unless they are also provided as free ereads. However, the writing was pretty well done and this was a nice light read for in between some of the meatier classics I have been reading.
