Halt, Will and Horace are trailing Tennyson and his group of outlaw thieves masquerading as a religious cult known as the Outsiders. Although they chased them out of Clonmel, they didn't capture the group, and now the Outsiders are headed through Picta, aiming for Araluen. Tennyson has a pair of paid Genovesan assassins hanging back behind the main group, waiting to ambush the Rangers and Horace in a forest of dead trees. In the battle, Halt is nicked by a poisoned crossbow bolt before Will kills one assassin, and the pursuit is abandoned in order to care for Halt. Will realizes the his best bet is to ride out for Macindaw and bring back Malcolm, the best and most advanced healer he knows. While he is gone, the remaining assassin is stalking Horace and a near-comatose Halt. Will and Horace have to prove to themselves that they can handle things without Halt's advice... they don't have any other choice. Lots of battle action and strategy, outlaws, pirates, Scotti raiders and mercenaries! Best to read the others before this one, for strong 6th grade readers and up.
