Actually I'd give this 4.5 stars if I could. There's some great Scottish history and folklore in this book. It gave me a better understanding of the border reivers and how they viewed the world. I loved the role of ancestors in this book.

I didn't love the stereotypical mobster types and that entire aspect of the book. I could have done without it. I also had a disagreement with the way the author dealt with metaphysical issues.

So I thought it was a very good book, but I felt like it was trying to be two books at once. If I could have separated the historical/cultural strand of the narrative from the contemporary thriller type strand, it would have felt better integrated thematically.
