When Skeeter Pellan comes home to Jackson Mississippi, her beloved nanny Constantine has left the family for good. She is shocked and angry as she gets no reasonable explanation to what has caused that sudden leave. Skeeter is only 22 years old and has a College degree in journalism but in 1962 in Mississippi, that does not promise much. She has a career to build up and a man to find and marry to.

Aibileen is a black, wise maid who has taken care of white children ever since she remembers it. She has lost her own son in an accident and still tries to get over it. At the same time she unintentionally gets deeply attached to Mae Mobley, the little girl she is looking after now when her son is gone. They have a strong connection but Aibileen knows that it can easily be broken as Mae Mobley grows old.

Minny is Aibileen’s best friend and also a house maid. She is black as the night, short and fat, but she can cook as goddness and no one can oppose this. Her tongue is as sharp as a knife and due to it she has just lost yet another job. . Minni finally finds a new job, working for someone who is new in town and has no idea about her reputation.

The paths of all three will come across. Although these Mississippi women have so little in common at first, they will start a very brave project, put their own lives at a great risk and shake the world of many ...

I cannot express how much I loved this book. I liked every single page of it and enjoyed it from the very beginning to its end. There are not many books I would read a second time, but this one is one of them.
Kathryn Stockett has done a wonderful job, a true master piece! All the characters and scenes are so real and so alive that you would be fascinated!
