Follett has a way of creating characters that are original and so real. I fall in love with them from the minute he introduces them to the plot and I can't book the book down, because when I'm without it I'm lonely for my new friends :)

I enjoyed "Fall of Giants," but wasn't all the interested in all the war strategy that was plentiful throughout. I hate to say it, but it just wan't "Pillars of the Earth."

When the book ended I couldn't decide why I had such an unsettled feeling over the whole thing and then after a few days of contemplation I realized that it was the setting and time period that had me concerned. The book takes place during World War One and the characters are from all over the world, so you are seeing the issues for many perspectives. It was just hard to swallow when the book's last page was turned and so many of the characters were so hopeful and ready to move on with their lives and live in more positive worlds and to know that World War Two is just around the corner and these dreams are sure to come to an end. It was a good read and an exciting one, but it was kind of depressing.

Eruwen That is exactly how I felt about this book! For me, the political debates and the war strategies started putting me off at some point. I felt so sad for Maud at the end... she finally got what she wanted (more or less), and then, like you said, there is World War II around the corner.

Julia Mukuddem Interesting comments ... haven't thought about it in that way, as Ken Follett can do nothing wrong in my eyes, but I hear what you're saying ... it is rather sad ... :)
