After reading "Last Breath" I thought that the Morganville Vampires series could not get any better. I was wrong. "Black Dawn" is even more incredible because it has so many incredible story lines all blended into one. This time, Rachel Caine tells the story from various character's perspectives instead of just Clare. Eve, Shane, Hannah, Michael, etc. all get to have their say. Usually, I do not like it when the story is told by too many points of view; but, it really worked here.

This story takes place shortly after the gang has rescued Michael, Amelie and Oliver from the Drueg pool. Amelie's prognosis is not good. In fact, they expect her to die within days. Michael is suffering from a kind of vampire post traumatic stress disorder once he realizes that he almost killed Eve in his bloodlust. Eve is pretty shaken as well.

Shane and Clare continue to find comfort in each other while also trying to come up with a game plan to take down the drueg. As odd as it may seem, crazy, adorable Myrnin is the one to come up with the plan to go to the water treament plant and shut it down virtually limiting access to travel for the dreug. They are able to shut off all of the valves except for one and unfortunately, Shane is taken. Before Clare can do anything about it she is whisked away by Myrnin while he swears Shane is dead. Clare is having none of that and she devises a plan to go back and find out for herself.

Someone in Morganville is going to die. Will it be Shane? The only way to find out the answer to this question is to read the book. This story has plenty of twists and turns. I was surprised; then, dismayed, saddened, exhilarated and finally emotionally exhausted! What a fun ride. This is Morganville at its' best.
