Since I was such a big fan of Fablehaven, when we got in the advance copy of Brandon Mull's new series, I grabbed it before it even made it to our promo shelf. Similar to how I felt about Fablehaven, I like the characters, but there's a distance there too. It's more about the world and the adventures than connecting to any one character.
This series had a more Wizard of Oz meets Lord of the Rings feel than Fablehaven...it's all about the journey, making stops along the way to meet quirky new characters some friend, some foe. I was through the book in no time and then disgusted that I am now waiting not only for the sequel, but the book itself isn't even out yet. I keep telling myself I won't start a series until til the last book is written, so I don't have to wait....but that's not really working out for me.
I thought the bad guy's concept of inviting his enemies to live in utopia was a great one, and the twist on their quest to defeat him was nicely devious. I liked the main characters travelling companion, Ferrin, even when it wasn't clear whose side he was on. Jasher wasn't my favorite, but his immortality seed was kinda cool, though weird. But I want to hear more about Corinne, especially if she escapes the swamp tree, which she really must do at some point!
So now I wait impatiently for the next book...

Jill Furedy I work for a bookstore and the publishers often send out advanced copies of books...often authors I've never heard of, so I was so excited to get this one!

Jenn I was able to snag the advanced copy from our store, too. I loved it! So excited for the new series.
