I picked this up at the Townhouse hotel in Cape Town. Its a nice hotel where every room has a bookshelf. This was not my first choice - there was an english translation of "la Madre" by the Sardinian nobel laureate Grazia Deledda. I gave that up after a couple of chapters -- its the kind of story where right from the outset, you know for certain that the protagonist is going to die of natural causes in the course of the last chapter.

I then picked this up -- and began reading it --and have to say it was a real breeze.
No, I didnt steal it from the hotel, I exchanged it with a book by Thomas Keneally.
