My high expectations for this book were based partly on other reviews I had read and the introduction written by Charlie Higson who said that this was his favorite Bond novel. However, the super spy himself doesn't appear until a third of the way through. Instead, Fleming focuses on Red Grant, the villain, whose ultimate role in the novel lasts less than a couple dozen pages. I also found Bond's sidekick, Darko Kermin, to be more interesting than Bond himself who seemed completely fooled by SMERSH's plan to have him killed and far too lucky (as is always the case I guess) when it came to his confrontation with Grant.
