Leon's Guido Brunetti hits the canals of Venice again in the 11th installment. Guido is approached by a college student of his wife's who wants to look into getting her dead grandfather's record cleared for actions he was convicted of after WWII. After the meeting the girl ends up dead. Then her grandfather's lover ends up dead.

War crimes and Italians views on Benito Mussolini are delved into in this mystery. The story was a little disjointed and didn't flow as well as most of Leon's works.
