Cussler's "Trojan Odyssey" had no real connection to Homer's Odysseus other than the fact that the villain(s) built an evil empire inspired by the King of Ithaca and had "discovered" that the Trojan war was not fought in Greece, but closer to the British Isles.
Lamentably, we don't even see an aging Dirk Pitt until page one hundred of the novel when, of course, he defies the odds and saves thousands in an outrageous act of heroism. Almost too outrageous, even for Dirk Pitt.
Look, I have always enjoyed the fantastic efforts of Pitt and Giordino, but things just seemed too neatly packaged this time around. Previous Pitt adventures have had me greedily devouring the next page to see what happens; this time, the need to read wasn't there. The action continued to move by quickly, but there were just too many disjointed side stories to keep me thoroughly engaged. It wasn't the worst read of my life, and some parts were interesting, but something needs to shake up this series. Interestingly enough, the last 25 pages of this book may have provided just that. We'll see!!!!
