Coetzee refuses to let the reader off the hook. A painfully exhilarating experience. He dissects his characters without anaesthetic. How fresh and new and lovely my own life suddenly seemed.

Andrea I like your comment about some books making one's own life feel fresh and full of possibility. The trite old saying "count your blessings" seems to fit the reader's motivation with some books. "My life might be bad, but at least I'm not that poor sap."
