it was ok
bookshelves: borrowed, scifi
Read from March 22 to 24, 2011

How embarrassing. I liked a Kevin Costner movie better than this book. I saw it first, and it's always hard to judge whether that's why I had the preference.

Most of the book was fine. I'm not a big post-apocalyptic genre fan and haven't read much of it, but it didn't seem terribly far-fetched or unreasonable. Gordon starts his 'career' as a postman and his internal philosophical debates are thought-provoking in that 'what would I do in his situation' kind of way.

But I found as the book went on, more of it became far-fetched in a way I didn't appreciate. The final reveal about the Holn survivalists made me want to throw the book across the room. It seemed to take the book out of the believable space I'd found it and solidly into scifi.

(view spoiler)

I gave it 2 stars, but if you're a scifi or postapoc genre fan, it's probably a better book. I just couldn't say 'I liked it'.
