I picked up this book because I'd read and loved Kidd's 'The Secret Life of Bees', which is one of my favorite books. I had high hopes for this one, but discovered 1/2 of the way through that they had been dashed. The central story about her mother was interesting, however the character of Jessie just seemed like another bored housewife who wanted to add some more excitement to her life now that her daughter has gone of to college. Her relationship with Whit, the monk, was one of need disguised as love, and I found her acting more like a lovesick teen. I felt no sympathy nor cared for either of them.
