The chapters of this book that focus on the science of giant and rogue waves are amazing. The research is excellent, and the writing is interesting. The chapters about surfing got a little old after a while. I liked them at first because I always love to learn about a new sub-culture, and I knew nothing about surfing. But reading descriptions of something so visual can be boring; I kept wanting to go to YouTube to try to find video of the places she described.

Food poisoning, electrical outages, and pirates had pretty much persuaded me to give up cruising, but this book took care of any last vestiges of desire I had. It's dry land for me from now on.

I didn't realize until after I started the book that Susan Casey also wrote Devil's Teeth, a book about sharks that I loved.
