My mom teaches 3rd grade and she brought me this book to read. I read it in a couple sittings and loved it!

First of all, I love it when kids/young adult books reference "classic" "literature" type books. I just think it gets kids ready to be excited about books that might have sounded boring to them without some sort of window into the books.

Beyond that, though, the book was beautiful. I usually do not use such flowery language about books--I'm not a fan of poetry (I know, I know) and, although I love literature, I like it to be accessible and that usually means I like the power of the story to render the flowery language/imagery invisible.

In this case, though, I really thought the story was beautiful. And it makes me want to know the taste of sorrow mixed with strawberry and root beer.

It's also not what I expected a kid's book about a dog to be. Just saying.
