this book is so beautifully wrought i could hardly stand it. it literally pained me, mostly because this is the book i would want to write if i was a novelist. i now understand why gabriel garcia marquez said he had to kill faulkner in his own writing, so influential were faulkner's books on his development. this book grapples with all the great themes of the south, yet is universal in its scope and insight into the human condition. i knew i was taken because of the way i suffered right along with his characters.
