I was excited to hear Annie Proulx wrote about her "dream" house in Wyoming which she can't live in during the winter due to wind and "drift stuckness." Comes across as a bit curmudgeonly (and admits that), but the details of land purchase, historical/geological background, conflicts with neighbors and cows and architects and so much else - distinguish her latest book. A memoir, I was struck by her age (I thought she was my age!), the scope and depth of her research, her lifelong traveling, and her intimate knowledge of flora and fauna wherever she's lived. By book's end, we're with the birds. So many and so much wind. So much wind...
She writes about the same area as Edward Abbey did and I liked hearing the differing takes on place and people.
