Why I read this book:
This was another genre research book. Although I hadn't read anything by Sherrilyn Kenyon before, I had seen her name enough times while wondering through the book stores that I knew she had published many highly successful novels. Her publication record is pretty impressive (41 novels listed at Macmillan's author site). The back cover summary intrigued me. Something about the reluctant damsel in distress having to rely on the last man who wants to be protecting her, but is honor bound to do so.

My one sentence summary:
In Born of Night, the rogue assasin Nykyrian is the only person Kiara can trust with her life and her heart and in doing so she will save him as well.

Kuddos:
Nykyrian is a great anti-hero with a tortured past. Kiara is also a fully developed characters. This is a dark sci-fi with a romantic pairing that is part of a larger plot. I loved the twists and turns. The emotional and sexual tension between Kykyrian and Kiara was well done. I also loved a secondary character Syn. The writing was really good. Sherrilyn Kenyon relays the complexity of a futuristic universe without being overwhelming or confusing.

Quibbles:
I read this book in the same week as Surrender of a Siren while on vacation. Guess what? Kiara is a virgin who, like Sophia, doesn't tell the guy she's about to sleep with. Instead she lets him find out the hard and awkward way. I was almost ready to throw the book off the balcony, but the story was so good I overlooked the virginal damsel in distress. I was a late bloomer myself. I have no problem with the character being a virgin. But come on, cut the guys a little lack and warn them before they try to for penetration. My other major complaint was that given the torture Nykyrian endures from the age of 5 it's a wonder he isn't more of a monster and that he can get passed it enough to let Kiara close. The ending had a little bit of overly lucky turns of events, but I didn't feel cheated by it.

Final verdict:
I'm definitely reading more by Sherrilyn Kenyon. The next book in the series is about Syn, and I can't wait to see his story fleshed out.
