Cute book. Like pretty much every Mieville I've ready, it was slow for the first 1/3 and impossible to put down for the last 1/3 and good in between. To me, the obvious parallels are with Gaiman novels: parts of the book feel to me like "Perdido Street Neverwhere" or "Coraline II." But this is probably at least somewhat due to both authors writing in the traditions of older childrens' book authors I never read.

Anyway, here's the thing: China Mieville's real gift is for weird creatures and environs. It's like he's a mutant, and his superpower is describing oddball imaginary beings. And this book is to some degree a menagerie of his creations wrapped around a simple story for oldish kids with nice morals. It's a great deal of fun to see him really stretching his facility with goofy ideas.
