Perhaps if I'd read Richard Flanagan's book at any other time than right after finishing Roberto Bolaño's 2666, I might have been able to wade through it. My problem is the Victorian language, almost a dialect, in which Gould's Book of Fish is written. Bolaño's prose is spare, direct, and truthful. Even though Flanagan's story is every bit as gritty as Bolaño's, the prose is all flowery euphemism. After Bolaño, I just couldn't stomach it.
