Cara Lynn James has written another faith-filled story of romance in the Gilded Age, contrasting the life of the working class with that of the privileged, and with a dash of intrigue for good measure. Secretary Charlotte Hale only wants to provide well for her sister and aunt, so when her boss at the newspaper office offers her a plum assignment to spy on a columnist writing for a competing publication, she jumps at the chance. The one thing she never expected was to fall in love with the object of her investigation, upstanding professor of religion Daniel Wilmont. Ms. James deftly weaves the characters' spiritual and emotional conflicts with the obstacles confronting them in their careers and personal lives while anchoring the story firmly and in vivid detail in her Newport, Rhode Island, setting.
