I found this to be a very disturbing story. Maybe I'm too sensitive, but what this woman went through should not be wished upon your worst enemy. I thought the narrator showed great fortitude with the indignities made on her. I couldn't understand, though, why she didn't leave the area and go north. (Although the only safe place for a runaway slave was north of the North they referred to. The slaves were still not safe anywhere in the US, only in Canada.) This book was a very good insight into the time of slavery in the South. Despite losing sleep over it, I would still recommend it.
