For those of us whose fathers or grandfathers never shared their wartime experiences (or maybe we ran out of time before asking them), it's hard to look past the textbook synopses and movie plots imprinted in our brains. It takes a talented researcher and narrator to bring us into the story, past the military jargon and numerics, and into the experience. Hillenbrand does just that and has opened my eyes to an entire generation's sacrifice through the story of one amazing man.

(Side note: I can't believe anyone would even get in a plane in the 1940s.)
