And Both Were Young
by Madeleine L'Engle
by Madeleine L'Engle
This is certainly nothing like L'Engle's Wrinkle in Time! It is the story of Flip, a young girl who is sent to boarding school in Switzerland when her mother dies, and Paul, a local boy who is struggling with issues of his own. Flip is very close to her father and misses him and is grieving for her mother. She does not fit in with the girls at school and is very lonely. Paul and Flip become good friends and help each other through their hard times. This is a sweet coming-of-age story that shows that friendship should be the foundation of a good relationship. Flip also learns that people often have more to them than is apparent initially when she gets to know the girls. She also shows her strength of character when she gives up her chance to win the big ski contest and all her dreams and hard work to go help another girl who was injured. The story shows that we can overcome whatever has happened in our past and work to become the kind of person we want to be and to hold on to our values in all circumstances.
