I read this only because my dad told me to when I was a kid. I put it off because I thought it would be a stiff historical account of medieval royalty. To my surprise it very readable (but you have to get over the language of medieval England). There is romance, adventure, irony and humor. The author has classic characters from brave knights to a dumb but brave inbred noble, to a beautiful but oppressed Jewess. This book opened up a revival in interest in medieval Europe.
