Amazing - so thought provoking. I think the 'morally right' or maybe 'morally best' way to handle the situation would be to say that you can't forgive for others, but comfort him with the knowledge that God forgives true repentance. With that being said - I'm almost positive that I would not be able to respond that way in the situation. The author displays extreme courage, compassion and fortitude of character by even listening, letting the patient hold his hand and by remaining silent where others might have lashed out.
